Three Decembers - Cancelled
2019/20 SEASON CANCELLATION UPDATE | APRIL 2, 2020
For ticket refund and donation information, please visit Portland Opera.
Thank you for your patronage of Portland Opera. It’s with heavy hearts that we have made the decision to cancel the remaining performances of our 2019/20 Season. This cancellation began with Bajazet, and now includes the Big Night concert, Pagliacci, and Three Decembers, as well as public programming events surrounding those productions. This cancellation also includes the Portland Opera Resident Artist recital series.
Our intention with this decision is to honor the well-being of our community and our company, while contributing to solutions to help slow the spread of the coronavirus disease COVID-19. The health and wellness of our audiences and company members remain of paramount importance to us. That is why we will not take this risk, and that is why our team is working diligently with artists, musicians, and collaborators to focus on the future of Portland Opera and our upcoming season.
We’ll be back soon. Our team is working remotely, but that won’t keep us from using this time to dive into strategy, planning, and future building. We are going to share Opera a la Cart around town, and keep you connected with our Resident Artists and engagement teams through digital content. And, when we have the chance to be together at the opera this autumn, it will be exponentially more joyful and bittersweet, for having missed you during this challenging time.
We’ve been a member of this vibrant arts ecosystem since 1964, and we intend to continue to grow. We are privileged to be a leading arts employer and cultural institution in service of our region, and that responsibility anchors our vision for our future.

JAKE HEGGIE
Conducted by Nicholas Fox
Directed by Alan Paul
THE PORTLAND OPERA PREMIERE OF COMPOSER JAKE HEGGIE.
A heartwarming and bittersweet family portrait comes into focus over the course of three Decembers in 1986, 1996, and 2006. Madeline (a Broadway actress) and her adult children face the challenges of secrets, resentment, and reconciliation in this illuminating story about the very real complexities of being a family.
“Three Decembers is a profound story about time, family, and art. I love stories that span decades, and this opera explores the wounds, secrets, and dreams of a family over three Decembers in three different decades. It’s a juicy opera to direct, and I can’t wait to come back to Portland and bring it to life.” – Alan Paul, Stage Director
