Music on Main: MAARQUII
Arkansas born & Oregon raised quadruple threat rapper, singer, dancer, & multimedia artist MAARQUII informs her artistic practice through her southern & northwestern roots, & the spirituality that she finds through her Blackness & Trans-Womanhood. Weaving her works together through a myriad of mediums, she pulls you into her world of reclaiming space, honoring ancestors, & transcendent sex positivity.
Making her recording debut with the experimental, no holds barred 2016 EP “Heavy Petty”, Maarquii stood out from the gate as an artist able to effortlessly command attention with her seamless journeys through multiple genres & writing styles. Bandcamp Daily, among others, took notice, lauding the release as “Oscillating between soulful R&B and club-centric hip-hop…. united by Dickerson’s lithe, expressive voice, equally adept at dispensing life lessons, posing threats, and celebrating love. It’s a record that is undeniably black and queer, with an attitude and lyrics that defy gender.”
Since then, MAARQUII has continued evolving her style of bravado bars and genre experimentation. For her debut album C.A.B.O., released in 2018, she again teamed up with production duo JVNITOR, who helmed her debut EP. Paper Magazine premiered the video for the eponymous lead single, praising it as “..a testament to the power of embracing one's individual sexual freedom.”
MAARQUII has been steadily lighting up stages with her incandescent live shows, whilst sharing bills alongside legendary icons like Big Freedia, BBYMUTHA, Doja Cat, Cakes Da Killa, Mykki Blanco, & The Last Artful, Dodgr. As is abundantly clear to all who bear witness to her, MAARQUII, as a talent, a voice, a story, is not only undeniable & unique, she is a revelatory star by virtue of her raw relatability.
