The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History

Ned Blackhawk (Western Shoshone) is a professor of history and American Studies at Yale University and was on the faculty from 1999 to 2009 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. A graduate of McGill University, he holds graduate degrees in history from University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Washington and is the author of Violence over the Land: Indians and Empires in the early American West, a study of the American Great Basin that garnered half a dozen professional prizes, including the Frederick Jackson Turner Prize from the Organization of American Historians.

In his recent book, The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History, Blackhawk provides an Indigenous perspective on questions of citizenship and the literal and figurative shaping of what America is today. Blackhawk’s retelling of U.S. history acknowledges the enduring power, agency, and survival of Indigenous peoples, yielding a truer account of the United States and revealing anew the varied meanings of America.

About the Mark O. Hatfield Lecture Series

For twenty-five years, the Oregon Historical Society has presented the Mark O. Hatfield Lecture Series, bringing together the nation’s top historians and award-winning authors for thought-provoking evenings of history. The series began at the suggestion of Senator Hatfield and continues as a tribute to his legacy of public service and as an opportunity to share stories of the people and events that have shaped history. Past speakers include notable historians and authors Heather Cox Richardson, David McCullough, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Jon Meacham, Cokie Roberts, and Isabel Wilkerson.

Series tickets to the four-part 2024 Mark O. Hatfield Lecture Series go on sale to OHS members on October 19 at 10am and to the public November 2 at 10am.

Tickets to individual lectures go on sale to OHS members January 19 at 10am and to the public January 26 at 10am.

A Note on General Admission Seating: The General Admission area at all Hatfield Lecture Series events has moved to open seating. To secure specific seats in advance, please purchase Reserved or Patron level tickets.

Virtual-only tickets are sold exclusively through the Oregon Historical Society. Virtual-only ticket holders will be able to livestream the event as well as have access to a recording.

All ticketholders will be emailed a recording of the lecture (closed captioning included) 48 hours after the event. The recording will be available for 14 days.

Copies of each speaker’s latest book (which include a signed bookplate) will be available for purchase before and after each lecture in the lobby of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
